Capt. Ky Lewis was born and raised in Clearwater.
He was truly born with fishing in his blood.
His father Bart Lewis was one of the first charter captains in
Clearwater in the 1930’ with the Charterboat Ramona.
Ky has fished professionally since 1960.
He was the youngest licensed captain in the state of Florida at
the age of nineteen. He
purchased the Daisy Mae I Charterboat in 1961.
Over the thirty-two years that he owned the Daisy Mae’s he
built three out of six. In 1993 he sold the last Daisy Mae, number VI.
Over the thirty-nine years that Ky has been guiding
he has won more tournaments on the west coast of Florida than any other
captain in the state of Florida. He
has set many records including, the first grand slam (Blue Marlin, White
Marlin and Sailfish) to be caught in a tournament and the first super
grand slam (Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish and a Swordfish).
In 1982 Capt. Ky lived his version of Jaws.
While 40 miles offshore of Cedar Key commercial fishing, Ky
hooked a great white. When
arriving home he received a call from Wood’s Hole in New England. The gentleman calling was writing an article for Time
Magazine. The news of
Ky’s hook up had already reached over 1,500 miles.
The gentleman on the phone asked Ky the length and girth of the
great white. At
approximately 23 feet long and a girth of over 15 feet Ky was told the
great white that he fought and lost would have weighed between seven and
eight thousand pounds. To
this day some nineteen years later Ky still has the hook and rope rig
that he had the shark on.
In 1994 Ky and his wife Nancy made the decision to
move to North Central Florida to offer their children a quieter pace of
life. Today Capt. Ky fishes
from a 15 ft airboat inshore and a 32 ft Custom Sabalo for inshore and
offshore.
Year round you can enjoy fishing inshore
for redfish, trout, pompano and tarpon off the coast of Yankeetown in
north central Florida. Offshore
Ky takes you after the grouper, kingfish, snapper, sailfish, wahoo and
dolphin.
You can also enjoy sightseeing and photography airboat rides in
pristine old Florida. You
will see parts of Florida that you could never see otherwise.
May and June you can enjoy the beautiful waters off
the coast of Boca Grande, the Tarpon capitol of the world.
You can also fish for snook, trout and redfish while in Boca
Grande.
